Very few people take up gliding, discover they dislike flying gliders, and leave. Most leave because the gap between one flight and the next was long enough that each lesson started by recovering ground they had already covered, and after a couple of years of that they could not see the end of it.
The arithmetic nobody does
Reaching first solo takes somewhere around 60 launches for an adult starting from scratch — anywhere from 30 to 100 depending on prior flying, age, and how consistently they fly. Take 60 as a working middle and the pace of flying decides everything:

Now put that against what most students actually achieve. A club that flies 30 days a year, with a student making 30% of them and getting three flights on a good day, produces about 27 flights a year — 2.3 a month. That is a 26-month path to solo, and that is assuming nothing goes wrong.
Weather goes wrong. Aircraft go unserviceable. The instructor who knows them is away. A realistic version of that student's first year is closer to twenty flights, and a three-year run at solo.
This is the two-year cliff. Most students who have not soloed within about two years do not go on to solo at all. Not because the skill is beyond them, but because two years of visible non-progress is longer than most people's patience for an expensive hobby they are not yet any good at.
Slow students pay more, which makes it worse
There is a second penalty on top of the frustration, and it compounds. Take the same 60 flights at the same club, and vary only the pace:

Identical flying. The slow student pays $1,400 more to reach the same point, because dues accrue with the calendar and not with progress. You can check the figures for your own club's rates in the cost-to-solo calculator.
So the student who is struggling to get flying is also the one paying the most for it, and is the most likely to conclude that the sport is expensive and slow. They are not wrong. It is expensive and slow — for them, at that pace.
Triage: find them before they go
Students almost never announce that they are leaving. They just stop appearing, and three months later somebody notices the name has not been on a sheet for a while.
The single most useful number a club can track about a student is days since their last flight. It is unambiguous, it needs no judgement, and it goes wrong long before anyone quits.
A workable set of thresholds:
- Over 30 days in season — worth a text. Often it is a holiday and nothing is wrong. Sometimes it is not.
- Over 60 days — an instructor should make actual contact, not a mailing-list email.
- Over 90 days — treat as lapsed and act like you want them back, because the next lesson after a gap that long is going to feel like starting over and they know it.
The intervention is not complicated. It is one person, who the student recognises, asking whether they are alright and when they are next coming down. Clubs routinely discover the answer is something trivially fixable — the student thought they needed to book and did not know how, or turned up twice and did not get flown and assumed they were in the way.
What to do on the day
Retention is mostly decided at the launch point, not at the AGM.
Fly the students first
On a busy day with a queue, the student who has come 40 minutes for a lesson should not be the one who goes home unflown while experienced members take check flights. This is contentious in some clubs and it should not be — the experienced member will be back next weekend regardless. The student may not.
Protect instructor continuity where you can
A student who flies with four instructors in five lessons spends part of each lesson re-establishing where they are. Some rotation is healthy and catches things a single instructor misses; total rotation with no shared record is just repetition.
If instructors write even two lines after each flight — what was covered, what to work on next — and the next instructor reads them, most of the cost of rotation disappears.
Tell them the number
Students imagine everyone else soloed in twenty flights. Telling a struggling student that the normal range is 30 to 100 and that pace matters more than talent is, repeatedly, the thing that keeps someone in the sport. Nobody quits because a task is hard. They quit because they think it is hard for them specifically.
What the club can change, and what it cannot
Some of this is outside a club's control. You cannot make it soarable, you cannot make a student turn up more often, and a club with one two-seater and forty students has a capacity problem that no amount of attentiveness fixes.
Within reach, roughly in order of effect:
- More flying days. Everything else is downstream of how many chances a student gets.
- Launch-rate discipline on the days you have. A well-run grid can double the flights a student gets from a single Saturday.
- Prioritising students in the queue when it is busy.
- Noticing the 60-day gap and making one phone call.
- A shared record of what each student has covered, so any instructor can pick them up.
Note what is not on that list: recruiting harder. A club losing students at the same rate it recruits them is running a very expensive treadmill, and fixing the leak is cheaper than fixing the intake every single time.
Where the record-keeping comes in. Days-since-last-flight, flights-this-season per student, and a debrief the next instructor can actually read are all things a club either has in one place or has scattered across a paper log and several people's memories.
