If you are deciding whether to start, or reassuring somebody at home, this is what the numbers actually say.
The numbers
The most useful study of this looked at UK air-sports accident rates across 2004–2006 and expressed them per launch and per hour, which is the only sensible way to compare.

In the United States, fatal gliding accidents run to fewer than a dozen a year across tens of thousands of participants and hundreds of thousands of flights.
Note "accident" here covers everything from a damaged wingtip upward, not only serious injury. The great majority are damage to aircraft rather than to people.
The finding that matters more than the headline
Look at those two rows again. A pilot in their first hour is roughly three and a half times more likely to have an accident per launch than the average across all pilots.
Risk in this sport concentrates in inexperience. And the period of greatest inexperience is precisely the period when you are flying with a qualified instructor sitting behind you, in a training aircraft, at your home site, in conditions somebody else has assessed. The structure of training exists because of exactly this distribution.
That has a corollary worth sitting with: the risk does not simply keep falling forever. It falls with experience, then rises again for pilots who fly rarely, or who move to a higher-performance aircraft, or who start flying cross-country and landing in fields. Those are all choices, made later, with more information.
What actually goes wrong
Structural failure of a modern glider is vanishingly rare. Aircraft are inspected annually, life-limited components are tracked, and airworthiness directives are mandatory. The overwhelming majority of accidents trace to human factors.
The recurring categories, roughly in order:
- Launch failures handled badly. A rope or cable break is a trained-for event; the accidents happen when the decision — land ahead or turn back — is made late or wrongly. This is why clubs practise it repeatedly.
- Stall and spin at low altitude, usually in the circuit, usually with a distraction. Low and slow with an attention problem is the classic chain.
- Landing accidents, including landings in fields. Mostly damage rather than injury.
- Mid-air collision, rare but serious, and the reason lookout is drilled so hard when several gliders share a thermal.
- Rigging and ground handling errors. A control not connected, a positive control check skipped. Entirely preventable, which is why the check is a ritual rather than a formality.
What you can actually change
In rough order of effect:
- Fly often. The single biggest variable you control. The pilot who flies twice a year is taking a materially different risk from one who flies fortnightly, and currency degrades faster than most people believe. This is also the argument for choosing the club you will actually drive to.
- Choose a club with a visible safety culture. Go and watch a flying day before joining. Do people brief properly? Does anybody cut corners when it gets busy? Is a mistake discussed openly or quietly buried? Culture is more predictive than equipment.
- Do the check flights you are due, properly. A review flight treated as a formality is a wasted opportunity to find out what has decayed.
- Be honest about currency after a gap. After a winter off, a couple of flights with an instructor is normal, not remedial.
- Move up deliberately. A higher-performance glider flies faster, lands faster and is less forgiving. The transition is a training event, not a purchase.
How to think about it
Gliding is not as safe as staying at home and it is not as dangerous as the internet believes. It sits alongside other air sports as an activity with real, managed risk, where the great majority of bad outcomes trace to decisions rather than to equipment.
What is genuinely different from many risky activities is how much of the risk is addressable by ordinary discipline: turning up often, flying with instructors when you are rusty, and belonging to a club where people say something when they see something. None of that requires talent.
If you are the one at home worrying: the useful questions are not about the aircraft. Ask how often they fly, whether their club briefs properly, and when their next check flight is. Those three answers tell you far more about the actual risk than any statistic on this page.
